Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer on oily skin review

Whenever you type in 'best primer for oily skin' in the search engine, the Smashbox Photo Finish always comes in top 10 seen on Get The Gloss, Bustle, and She Knows. I've had the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer in both original and pore minimising and I decided to put them to the test.

What does it do?
It's said silicone-based primers are great for oily/acne-prone skin which fits right into my skin type, silicone helps minimise large pores and gives you a smooth base to work with. The Smashbox Photo Finish Primer helps increase makeup longevity, fill in fine lines and pores, gives you a smooth base to work with, protects skin from environmental pollution, damage and stress. It is also lightweight and oil-free, is ideal or all skin types and is cruelty-free and vegan. It sounds very promising!

Application
A little of this product goes a long way and you can instantly see it slightly mattifies your skin, it's very easy to spread across your skin and slightly minimises your pores including the pore minimising edition. When you apply for foundation I noticed instantly how much easier it was to blend and create a flawless base.

Longevity
I don't touch up throughout the day but I did notice I was shiny around my t-zone area at the 6-hour mark. At the 8-hour mark, I had to blot my face with blotting paper as I was very greasy. Normally at the nose and forehead area, I get a little shiny on days when I am wearing different primers but not as greasy compared to these two primers.

Verdict
While the primer helped with a very smooth application and base, the pore minimising aspect was not very visible on my skin even with the pore minimising edition, The difference between the original and pore minimising is the colour with the original being clear and pore minimising to have a slight pink peach tint that blends away on the skin.

I felt that my skin was overall much greasier on my t-zone with this primer underneath with my natural oils seeping through especially around my nose, I tried using a setting spray which helped with the shininess a little compared to not using one. Overall I think this primer is just okay and not something that I need to rush out and buy.

Have you used these primers before?

Until next time!

  1. Shame this primer didn't impress you too much! I'm always on the hunt for a new primer as working in London and doing my makeup so early in the morning, I want it to stay put throughout most of the day!

  3. Thanks for writing this review :) You know despite having combination skin, I never got along with silicone based primers. For me they don't really make any difference when it comes to makeup longevity! They just make my face smooth and that's it.

  4. I think smashbox is quite an expensive brand so definitely wouldn't be buying this unless it was a holy grail product!

  8. I'd heard these were great for oily skin, but I think I'm going to reconsider buying a Smashbox primer now if they weren't very good for your oily skin! x

  9. A while ago I had a silicone primer from a brand called Gosh and my word it broke me out, I haven't gone back to them since. It is a shame you didn't get on with this.

  10. Such a shame that this was a little disappointing for you. I tend to experiment with primers a lot to see what's best for my skin. I don't think I'll be trying this anytime soon x
